Amorphophallus konjac
Depending when you receive this, we will supply it as a bulb or plant
Interesting plant with a striking snake skin mottled stem topped with a giant intricate divided leaf on top. When corm is mature it
produces a typical aroid flower and spathe of deep purple. Not too pleasant a fragrance as like its big cousin the giant arum it smells of
rotten meat. that has great leaves and an unusual flower with an unsual scent!
We grow these plants in bright filtered light, giving them a cool winter rest.
Amorphophallus Culture notes
- Select a pot with good drainage that measures at least 4 inches wider than the tuber you are planting. The pot should be at least 5 to 6 inches deep for a small tuber and 12 to 18 inches deep for a large tuber.
- Prepare a mixture of 2 parts loam, 1 part peat moss and 1 part sand. Alternatively, purchase a good quality potting soil formulated for house plants.
- Spread a 2- to 3-inch layer of soil in the bottom of the pot for a small tuber. For a large tuber, make this bottom layer 6 to 8 inches deep. Firm the soil with your hands to remove air pockets.
- Place the tuber face up on the soil, centered in the pot. The top of the tuber is bumpy and indented; the bottom of the tuber is smooth and rounded like the bottom of a bowl.
- Cover a small tuber with 2 to 3 inches of soil and a large tuber with 6 to 10 inches. Gently firm the soil again, then water the pot with enough water that some drips out of the bottom drainage holes. Pour off the excess water after 15 minutes. Do not fertilize at this time.
- Place the tuber in a warm, partially shaded spot. Avoid locations with very low humidity, such as near a heating vent, as the leaves desiccate or dry out in low humidity.
- Allow the pot to dry out before watering again. Once new growth appears, water often enough to keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy.
- Fertilize actively growing plants monthly with an all-purpose houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
