This botanical miniature orchid is a relatively new species, first described in Thailand around 2014. It grows epiphytically in the limestone hills in western Thailand at 800-900 meters altitude, in Umphang District.

The orchid is named after Professor Dr. Obchant Thaithong of Chulalongkorn University.

This compact orchid can also be described as a miniature orchid. This rare species has small red flowers and likes to grow on a block. The dark red flowers grow in a calyx-like shape and often have a yellow and orange lip. It is a spring bloomer, usually blooming around April/May.

A funny description of the way the red flower petals look when fully open is also like the mouth of a baby bird in a nest.

Our advice is to refrain from feeding this species between October and March and drastically reduce watering around December. In winter, spraying is only necessary when the humps are in danger of wrinkling. This usually amounts to once a week. In winter, the species will lose its leaves. These will return in the spring.
